Child seats in the Netherlands: Mandatory or Not?
In the Netherlands, it is not mandatory to use a child seat in a taxi. The reason is that a child seat takes up space, leaving less room for luggage or four passengers. By law, children up to 135 cm must be transported in an approved car seat. However, there are exceptions for taxis, allowing children as young as 3 years old to sit in the back seat with a seat belt. Children under the age of 3 can sit in the back seat without a child seat, for example on your lap.
Safety and Transportation in the Taxi
In a taxi, children 3 years and older may be transported in the back seat with the seat belt. Children under 3 years of age may sit "loose" in the back seat. On the passenger seat, only children 135 cm or taller may sit, always with the seat belt. It is important to note that the law does not require a child seat in taxis, but it is still important to transport children safely.
